The internet is a vast place of knowledge. Now, whether that knowledge is accurate, fake, entertaining, maddening, or whatever the purpose, it should not be relied upon as truthful or evidence, unless you have conducted your own research from credible sources. I say this because so many people get on the internet to spew lies, ruin others, and make money off people’s naivete, even when the information they provide is false or misleading. Now, I understand that some things are not meant to be taken as truth or said in a non-serious way, but can still be mistaken for fact. I am not saying content should be banned, but if it’s AI, an opinion, for entertainment purposes, etc., it should be easily identified as such.
The internet is the current “anything goes” place, where truth and reality go to die (I am sure this is much to the chagrin of the originators of the internet). In fact, it seems that more internet content is meant to mislead or bully. I’m not sure how we got to the place where it’s so easy to lie to people, in the same place where it is very easy to find the truth. The question that always comes to mind is, “Why are people so easily fooled or more prone to believe a lie than the truth?” I could probably spend the remainder of my days on Earth trying to answer that life mystery, but I am not sure I will ever get an answer. But I do know that most people quickly accept anything that supports their view, even when there are facts that clearly contradict it. For some, facts seem to be the last thing they want to consider.
For example, I went to prom with a group of friends. When we returned to school the following Monday, there were rumors that two of our friends had hooked up because they were seen taking pictures together, which we all did. I said the information was false, as we were together the entire time, and I was the last person dropped off at home. Of course, everyone said I was lying to protect my friends, which I was not. However, it was much easier for everyone to believe a made-up story from people who were not with us than to accept the boring truth.
So, I write all that to say, when a lie can entertain you, why believe the truth? Coupled with the fact that the internet is a place for lies to have wings and make it to all corners of the globe before the truth can wake up, get out of bed, and put on clothes. I hope that someday truth and logic will be the norm, and fakery will be vilified. However, until then, we must research and be careful with the information we spread or give to the audience.
